We Get Hate Mail and Misrepresentation

The New York Post ran an article about a couple who wants their right to marry. Then they did a follow up in which they accurately quoted me. They tweeted a link to that article, and that tweet drew many bigoted responses, but nothing even approaching a good argument as to why this couple, or any consenting adults, should be denied their rights.

Some people decided to email or comment here on this blow with their hate. Here, for example, is one submitted comment...

This destroys relationships with ALL FAMILY MEMBERS and the people practicing it period.

The experiences of millions of people say otherwise. But let’s see if this anonymous hater will explain how.

Genetic sexual attraction (GSA) should be looked at and advocated for and should focus on healing people not being intimately involved with your parents or family members.

Why not? I’m sure Hater McBigot will say why, right? Let’s keep reading.

The person who is advocating for this should be tried and sent to prison and undergo extensive mental health counseling far away from general populous.

Someone advocating for equal rights should tried for which crime? It’s mental illness to advocate for the rights of all?

Encouraging yet another psychological and physical abusive/abusing/abuse acts to people who will be preyed upon by evil fathers or mothers or family members with perverse or traumatic mental scars on fragile delicate or naturally submissive people.

This person thinks consensual (to be redundant) sex is abuse and a bad thing. That’s pitiable.

You should be ashamed of yourselves for advocating for something so dangerous to society and HUMANITY.

Hater still hasn’t explained anything, just babbled hate. We are proud of standing up for the rights of all.

Where do we draw the lines on tolerance?

Consent. Thanks for asking.

Keith you are disgusting, you have no idea what you are promoting.

I’m promoting equal rights.

You are promoting the destruction of family and boundaries.

Nah. I’m standing up for millions of families against bigotry.

If and when they exit their relationships with a family member to break up or death, it will never go back to normal. There will be a strain, guilt, remorse, so deep that the people affected by it and around it will struggle to lead a normal rest of their life.

Anyone who loves another risks heartbreak. By your (lack of) logic, nobody at all should ever be in a relationship. You know what hurts the most? BIGOTRY. Denial of rights. Denial of equality. SO STOP IT.

Hmmm... no good argument as to why people who consent to love each other this way shouldn’t, and should be denied their rights if they do. This is why full marriage equality will happen. There’s no good reason to deny it.

Here's the accurate quote in the New York Post...

“It is absurd to say that an adult can’t consent to marry their parent. That same adult can be sent to war, take on six or seven figures of debt, operate heavy machinery, be sentenced to death by a federal court, and consent to sex with five strangers (and marriage with one of them) but can’t consent to marry someone they love?” he told The Post. “In some of these cases, the genetic parent didn’t raise them and they met for the first time two years ago. Allegations of ‘grooming’ are laughable attempts to deny someone their rights even though it will have no impact on the person objecting.”

Emphasis mine. You will see why that is important below.

RT.com covered the NYP article

In the same article, the Post also interviewed Keith Pullman, who runs a blog in support of "the right of consenting adults to share and enjoy love, sex, residence, and marriage without limits on the gender, number, or relation of participants."

"It is absurd to say that an adult can't consent to marry their parent," Pullman declared, pointing out that adults of the same age "can be sent to war, take on six or seven figures of debt, operate heavy machinery, be sentenced to death by a federal court, and consent to sex with five strangers."

Pullman called allegations of parent-child grooming "laughable," and branded incest laws an attempt to "deny someone their rights."

Notice what is missing? When I said allegations of grooming were "laughable attempts to deny someone their rights" I was referencing  reunion situations in which the entire relationship was two or three years old. I was not laughing at the idea of a parent grooming a minor child.

"Why the hell are we giving 'incest advocates' any kind of platform?" questioned one woman, who called on the newspaper to take down the article and apologize, while Georgia Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted, "This repulsive article really just says everything about the media… No wonder everyone is so sick of the news. Shame on them."

She didn't say why consenting adults should be denied their rights.

Juanita Broaddrick, the alleged rape survivor of former President Bill Clinton, called the article "some sick sh*t," while author David J. Ley accused the New York Post of "dog whistling to outrage" and trying to stir up attention.

Again, no attempt to explain why consenting adults should be denied their rights.

There IS NO good reason. LET CONSENTING ADULTS BE TOGETHER HOW THEY MUTUALLY AGREE. The people you are discriminating against likely include people you know and admire

Drop your hateful bigotry. Support full marriage equality.

  4. I'm pretty sure that that news outlet deliberately removed the context to your last quote in order to brand you a certain way to detractors, and for them to continue seeing consensual adult incest from a prejudiced glance, and the same thing as abuse. Now, that's a crappy move.

I only delete/reject/mark as spam: spam, vulgar or hateful attacks, repeated spouting of bigotry from the same person that does not add to the discussion, and the like. I will not reject comments based on disagreement, but if you don't think consenting adults should be free to love each other, then I do not consent to have you repeatedly spout hate on my blog without adding anything to the discourse.
